Engage and Excel Spotlight Feature: Elizabeth Sunduzwayo

This week, we are delighted to celebrate Elizabeth Sunduzwayo – founder of New Hope North East, community advocate, and passionate champion for children with disabilities, family empowerment, and inclusive communities.

Elizabeth's journey into community leadership was shaped by personal experience. As the parent of a child with special educational needs and disabilities, she recognised the challenges many families face when trying to access the right support, services, and opportunities. Rather than accepting these barriers, she transformed her lived experience into a mission to help others.

Through New Hope North East, Elizabeth works tirelessly to support families of children with disabilities, helping them navigate local services, build confidence, and access opportunities that improve quality of life. She is passionate about ensuring that every child, regardless of ability or background, has the opportunity to thrive within an inclusive and supportive community.

At WEWN's recent Community Leaders meeting, Elizabeth spoke passionately about the importance of connection, collaboration, and using our collective voices to create change. She highlighted the identity challenges many Black children experience while growing up in the UK and emphasised the importance of teaching young people about their heritage, history, and the achievements of those who came before them.

Elizabeth believes that knowledge empowers communities. She encouraged women to use their voices, share their expertise, and step confidently into leadership, reminding us that lived experience is a powerful form of expertise that can influence services, policies and the lives of future generations.

Her message was one of hope, courage, and collective responsibility: when communities work together, they become stronger, more resilient and better equipped to support the next generation.
