We are proud to reflect on the impact of *Safe Steps: Wellbeing and Confidence for Migrant Women, a project that has recently come to an end after delivering meaningful support to women in our community.
Through Safe Steps, many migrant women were supported to build confidence, improve emotional wellbeing, reduce isolation, and feel safer when using public transport and accessing public spaces. The project created a trusted space where women could connect, share experiences and grow in confidence through peer-led, culturally responsive support.
As this important piece of work comes to a close, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to our previous funder, *Northern’s Community and Customer Improvement Fund*, whose support made this project possible. Their investment helped us reach women whose voices are too often unheard and created a strong foundation for lasting impact.
Importantly, the end of the project does not mean the end of the work.
The success and learning from Safe Steps have helped shine a light on the ongoing need to listen to women’s experiences of safety, particularly when travelling. As a result, WEWN has been invited to contribute to important regional research through the North East Combined Authority, delivered by WSP, focusing on how women and girls experience safety across the region.
As part of this continuation, we are encouraging women to take part in the *survey workshop taking place on Thursday 28th May at 7:00 PM*. This workshop is a valuable opportunity for women to share their lived experiences, influence future transport planning and safety improvements, and ensure that the voices of migrant women are included in decisions that affect their daily lives.
We especially encourage participation in this survey process because it builds directly on the legacy of Safe Steps. The project may have ended, but its purpose continues through this next stage of engagement, advocacy and change.
By taking part in the workshop and survey, women will be helping to shape a safer, more inclusive future for communities across the region.
